Accessing and Maintaining Personal Health Records

Accessing and maintaining personal health records or patient portals helps keep communication fluid between healthcare providers and patients.  When we can keep track of our own information, such as immunization records, lab results, procedures, etc., we are more involved and informed about our health.  One of the benefits of patient portals is that it leaves more time for direct patient care while at the physician’s office. It can also make information more readily available in emergency situations, allowing medical personnel to know your preferences and history without you having to tell them.

Just like with all databases used in healthcare, patient portals are protected by secured browsers.  They allow you to create your own username and password, letting you know if your password is too weak, if indicated.  Security questions may be asked in regard to logging into your account, as an added measure to ensure your security. Information in your portal can only be shared with medical personnel and those you choose to share it with.  Being careful about who you choose to share your information with is up to you.  Most electronic health records have a statement included saying they are not responsible for information that is breached because of username or password misplacement on the owner’s part.

Internet Service Providers In order to access your own patient portal, you must have internet access of some kind.   Internet is most commonly provided through wireless connection through an internet service provider.  T he most common providers in our area include Comcast, CentraCom, CenturyLink, Xfinity, and Vivint.   Most providers sign you up with a contract for at least a year, and come to your home to install your system.    Modems and Routers Some basic units that your internet service provider will install include a modem and router.   A router typically sits inside your home in an easy area to access.  This puts out the internet signal throughout the home or designated area.  The router is attached to a modem, ...

Virtual Support Groups

Support groups have been known to provide many benefits to their users.  Just like most things right now, support groups can be found on the internet, as well as in-person.  Virtual support groups are a means for which people with common health issues or problems can rely on each other for support, understanding and information, even when they are not geographically related.  They are a good way to obtain relevant information regarding treatment options, outcomes, and advice, as well as decreasing depression and anxiety for those involved.  They are available to not only those who are ill, but family and friends as well.  Topics discussed can range from cancer, death, depression, and much more. Confidentiality is always a concern when dealing with medical and mental health.  Support groups vary in rules of keeping confidentiality, but most encourage participants to only state their first name.  Do not put any identifiable information on these si...
